Inspired by the sea, the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) in Panjim, Goa, has recently been completed by MOFA Studio.
May 24th, 2024
The NIWS is a notable project backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Asia, offering a comprehensive range of courses in water sports, rescue operations and tourism management.
The architectural vision behind NIWS draws inspiration from, as the designers see it, the dynamic essence of the sea itself – a fitting approach for MOFA (‘manifestation of fluid architecture’). Designed to emulate the fluidity and energy of ocean waves, the structure stands as a testament to functionality, aesthetic appeal and of course relevance to the building’s use. The concept behind NIWS is aimed at transcending the conventional notion of a static building, instead embodying an environment that ignites the spirit of adventure and exploration.
Through the integration of parametric architecture and digital fabrication, the design narrative of NIWS unfolds with a sense of fluidity and motion, echoing the ever-changing nature of water. Viewed from above, the institute’s silhouette evokes the image of a majestic creature emerging from the depths of the Arabian Sea, while from ground level, its dynamic spaces beckon visitors to engage in a journey of discovery.
The interplay of light and shadow within NIWS creates an immersive and dynamic atmosphere, enhancing the user experience and blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The project as a whole clearly comprises a range of highly varied spaces and one imagines that it will come fully to life with increased use.
